D: This was my son’s first 3d movie. He wore the glasses almost the entire time! I find movies that I see with him to be difficult to really absorb. I just sort of emotionally attach myself to them immediately just due to the fact that I see them with him.

My first and most basic reaction though is that this was a pretty good animated film. One that didn’t dumb itself down for little kids but still being totally accessible to them. It dealt frankly with grief and death at times, which is when the film really was working for me.

BIG HERO 6

As as a superhero film it’s pretty good. Nothing that really breaks the Marvel mold. Howevery the squishy robot Baymax is awesome. He’s sweet and funny and ultimately kind. This was one of the better deviations from the standard shoot-em-up aspects of the genre.  However, as I sit and type this, he’s basically a cuddly Groot, both in character and in story arc.  (Basically he made me cry – thankfully I had those damn glasses on)

My favorite part of the film happens early on in the film, before all the death and sadness, was when Hiro’s (the main kid character) older brother is introducing him to all his friends at their lab. They each have their own personalities and “powers” but there were 2 things that  stood apart. 1. they were all powers based on their intellect in science and 2. they weren’t competitive with each other like those in that setting would normally be. They were just friends and supportive. It was a really nice scene with great undertones.

The film was sweet, funny and exciting. The animation was pretty great, as was the 3D. I can see how this is going to be both a franchise and also all the toys I have to buy during this holiday season.
